Atherosclerosis, animation. Atherosclerosis is the narrowing of arteries due to the formation of plaques in their walls. The plaques contain atheroma, a fatty substance composed of dead white blood cells, cholesterol and connective tissues. The plaques can narrow the artery to such an extent that normal circulation is prevented. This can cause conditions such as heart attack and stroke.
