Asteroids colliding in space. Asteroids are small rocky bodies thought to be debris left over from the formation of the Solar System. Most are found in the Asteroid Belt, a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, which contains millions of asteroids. Collisions such as this, or other perturbations, can change the orbit of an asteroid so that it heads towards Earth.
