1950s Soviet atom bomb test and effects. Footage of the detonation of atomic bombs, and the resulting effects, during Soviet nuclear tests in the 1950s at the Semipalatinsk Test Site in what is now Kazakhstan. This footage shows the initial detonations, fireballs and shockwaves and the formation of the characteristic mushroom clouds. The footage also shows trees, military vehicles and equipment, buildings and other ground structures being destroyed by the effects of the atom bombs. Soldiers are seen taking shelter in a trench. A total of 456 nuclear tests were conducted at the Semipalatinsk site between 1949 and 1989.
